After sitting there watching them set up for a period of a time, it was
obvious that nothing in the way of actual filming would be happening
just yet, so I decided to take a stroll down towards the other end of
the beach, as you do if you're a tourist who just happens to be there
pretending to mind your own business! My reasoning was that if I walked to the higher ground at the other end of the beach, I might ultimately be able to find somewhere that gave a better view of the production camp, or if not, at least there could be something more exciting to see - such as actual filming in progress - by the time I would be walking back up the beach the other way. Bethells Beach is probably the best-known and most recognisable of all the Xena: Warrior Princess filming sites, and is packed with places any fan would find immediately familiar. In the last picture on this page, you can see the spot where Xena and Gabrielle discussed "smelling the flowers" in Ulysses, the high ground where Perdicas' funeral pyre was, the island where Xena practiced her sword-twirling routine in Here She Comes... Miss Amphipolis, Callisto's cave lair from The Return of Callisto - also the same cave seen in Ulysses - as well as the very familiar headland which appears in the opening title sequence and many other episodes. It amused me to think that, thanks to all my other visits tracking down places Renaissance Pictures have previously used for filming, I am probably more of an expert on Bethells Beach's geography than they are by now... I knew being such an avid fan would reap its rewards one day! |
